Sandra Volny, Ph.D.

 

Sandra Volny is an artist/ researcher, founder of Sound and Space Research. She obtained her practice-based Master (MFA) at Concordia University in Montréal, and her research-based Master at the Sorbonne University in Paris. Her fascination with aural spatial awareness led her to develop and deepen a set of theoretical works, artistic experiments, and collective workshops during these last few years. She recently completed her doctoral thesis in Sciences of Arts and Aesthetics at Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne University.

Her work has been presented in individual and collective exhibitions at local and international venues, among others, at the Centre d’exposition de l’Université de Montréal (2019), Michel Journiac Gallery (Paris, France, 2017), FOFA gallery (Montréal, Canada, 2017), Ionion Centre for the Arts and Culture (Kefalonia, Greece, 2017), Centre Clark (Montréal, Canada, 2016), Dazibao Gallery (Montréal, CA, 2016), Raumlabor-267 Quartiere für zeitgenössische Kunst und Fotografie (Braunschweig, Germany, 2013) and Leonard and Bina Ellen Art Gallery (Montréal, 2011). Her videos have been screened in festivals such as the Braunschweig International Film Festival (2017), DOCM-Visions du Réel Market Film (2016), Festival Jean-Rouch (2012) and Festival Arts Souterrains (2012).

Volny is the recipient of several residencies and awards for artistic projects and academic excellence, such as the "Ateliers Montréalais" program at the Darling Foundry (2019-2022), a Quebec Center for Biodiversity and Science Seed Grant (2018), a Creation and Exploration Project Grant from the Québec Council for the Arts (2015), two Canada Council for the Arts Travel Grant (2015, 2017), a Hearing Landscape Critically - Harvard University Travel Grant (2015), multiple Conferences and Seminar Grants from the School of Doctorate studies (2013-2015). She was also awarded the State of Lower Saxony Program for the Promotion of Young Artist in Sound Art (2012) and a Study and Research residency grant from Region Île-de-France (2011).

Volny has led workshops, given talks and lectures at international events including the master class and seminars of the Ionion Center for the Arts and Culture (2017-2018), Hearing Landscape Critically at Harvard University in Cambridge (2015), Running with Concepts: The Sonic Edition, Blackwood Gallery in Toronto, CA, (2013), the 2nd International Congress on Ambiances at the Canadian Centre for Architecture, in Montréal, CA (2012) and Hochschule fur Bildende Kunste (Master of Fine Arts) Braunschweig. She also led talks and workshops with her collective Triangular Project at Universidad de Antofagasta (Architecture Faculty), Universidad de Chile (Master of Fine Arts Faculty) and Instituto Chileno Antártico (2015).
